Yoko de Montmartre

Documentary (52’-90’)

Written by Franck Priot with the collaboration of Hiromi Kimura, directed by Joël Farges.
Produced by Franck Priot

Yoko de Montmartre revives the incredible and forgotten itinerary of the Japanese Yoko Tani who was in the 50s and 60s the first Asian star of French and European cinema. Dancer, actress in cinema and on stage, daughter of a Japanese feminist who died very young, Yoko introduced and invented in France a new type of feminine beauty, of glamour: the Asian.

Synopsis: Arriving in Paris at the age of 22 in 1950 to escape marriage, social pressure, and perhaps the Japanese mafia, this survivor of the bombing of Tokyo became dancer and actress. She managed to be the first Asian woman to become a lead actress seducing Western heroes on the big screen, in interracial love stories transgressing the conventions of the time. She gets full recognition in Cannes in 1960 with The Savage Innocents (Les Dents du Diable) by Nicholas Ray. From then on, she is a star, and will shoot fifty films and series.

Yoko seduced Westerners with her style and beauty, which she first showed stripping at the Crazy Horse. She was the one turning Europe from the “yellow peril” to the “Yellow Fever”, thus widening the codes of glamour…

The amazing and forgotten journey of this «Asian Josephine Baker» was also the brilliant posthumous revenge for a feminist mother died early during the war. As our research for this documentary discovered, Yoko’s mother, Taeko was an amazing feminist spritit, full of freedom and intelligence. She too was forgotten. Her book “Pour les jeunes filles qui avancent” (For young lady who move on), written just before her death, will be a guiding path for her daughter.

And these lessons in womanship will allow Yoko to succeed in the improbable: a career in a world of European entertainment, a scene that was then totally (and unconsciously) racist.
